Winter cycling is as much about maintaining momentum as it is about keeping warm. A common trap is to let good intentions slip when the weather turns cold and the wind picks up, only to spend the rest of the day regretting the missed opportunity.
Even a short ride counts. An hour in the saddle covering a modest distance is far better than nothing at all, and it keeps the habit alive during the months when it is easiest to abandon.
The key point is continuity. Cycling at least once a week through winter, however brief the trip, helps preserve a base level of fitness that will pay off when longer rides return in spring. It is worth wrapping up properly and getting out regardless.
Practical considerations
Staying warm and comfortable is essential for winter riding. The right clothing makes a significant difference, as does preparing the bike itself. Puncture-resistant tyres, for instance, reduce the likelihood of stopping for repairs in the cold — a small change that can make winter rides considerably more pleasant.
