InstaMapper is back, GPS, tracking, Android, iOS app

The GPS tracking service InstaMapper has been revived by a new development team, some months after it appeared to have shut up shop for good.

InstaMapper handles GPS tracking for vehicles and for outdoor pursuits such as walking and cycling. Routes can be viewed and devices managed through the service’s website, and a new Android app is available, with an iOS version in development.

The service previously built a following among cyclists who used it to log their rides and publish the results elsewhere. Its Android app earned particular praise for running without errors and drawing relatively little power from the battery.

A web API is also in place, which should allow InstaMapper’s GPS points and data to be shared with other websites and platforms.

Early use of the relaunched Android app on a short walking trip has been promising, with longer cycling trips planned in the weeks ahead to put the service through its paces.
