The original grips on a Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike had been in place since the bike was bought in 2009. Over the years they had worn down steadily, and the rubber had begun to perish. By the end, they were genuinely unpleasant to ride with.
The replacement was a pair of Bontrager Rhythm Lock-On Grips, picked up from an Evans Cycles shop in Gatwick for £11.99. The red aluminium lock-on clamps give the grips a striking look, and they suit the bike well.
Fitting the grips
Removing the old grips took a bit of effort but no real trouble: with some elbow grease they twisted off cleanly. The new grips need a small Allen key to loosen the lock clamps before they slide onto the handlebars. Once in position, the Allen screws are tightened and the grips are locked in place.
Verdict
A worthwhile purchase. The new grips improve the bike’s appearance considerably compared with the worn originals, and they feel good to hold, with just the right amount of grip.
